Congressman Jerry Nadler Endorses Richard Aborn for Manhattan DA
NEW YORK—US Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY) today endorsed Richard Aborn for Manhattan District Attorney, touting Aborn’s progressive vision and record for the office. Nadler also said that Aborn is best equipped to keep what has made the DA office great, while making the needed improvements to modernize and update the office.
“If you want a true progressive leader who knows the DA office inside and out, understands public safety on the highest levels, and will protect our deepest values, Richard Aborn is far and away the best candidate for District Attorney,” Nadler said. “I’m convinced that Richard Aborn will not only win this race, but be a fantastic DA who carries on the greatest traditions of the office while making needed improvements to bring it to the cusp of modern law enforcement.”
“Congressman Nadler has been a progressive champion representing Manhattan for several decades and is truly one of the nation’s most respected progressive leaders,” Aborn said. “I am honored and humbled to receive his support, and as DA I look forward to working with him to ensure we take a progressive and effective approach to preventing crime and protecting our social values.”
Rep. Nadler has represented the West Side of Manhattan for over 30 years. He is the Chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties. Nadler is also a member of the House Judiciary Committee and the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
The support for Aborn comes as he has easily compiled the broadest, deepest coalition of support while attracting the most enthusiasm in this race. Despite being a first-time candidate for office, Aborn has picked up 17 endorsements by currently elected officials, while no other candidate has more than three. The endorsements span uptown, downtown, gay, straight, black, white, Latino, male, and female. Aborn has also been endorsed by the Working Families Party, Legal Aid Attorneys, the most political clubs, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton, several former candidates in this race, and others.
Aborn has devoted his career to innovative ways of fighting crime the right way. He started his law enforcement career prosecuting violent felonies under Robert Morgenthau. He masterminded the Brady gun control bill — and became the NRA’s worst enemy. He was a leader in the expansion of the use of DNA evidence to both convict criminals and exonerate the innocent. As the managing partner of a law firm, he has supervised scores of attorneys. And his independent investigation of the NYPD took on police misconduct and brutality.
